Brief about the Project
This project is a joint initiative of Jagran Pehel in association with Unicef and Dainik Jagran. This is an advocacy campaign for “Newborn care and Survival” which will help not only to reduce Neonatal mortality, but will also create awareness on better upbringing of new born, starting from antenatal care to neonatal care. Context of the campaign Newborn period is the period of a child starting from birth to one month of life, and is the most vulnerable period of a child’s life. Out of about 26.1 million children born every year in India, approximately 938,000 newborns die within the first month of their life.
The neonatal mortality rate in India is 36 per 1,000 live births, contributing to about 50 per cent of all childhood deaths. The neonatal mortality rate in Uttar Pradesh is 48 per 1,000 live births (SRS 2007). It is estimated that in Uttar Pradesh, 55, 80, 300 births take place every year. This means that there are 2, 67, 850 newborns that die every year, 22, 320 newborns die per month, 740 newborns per day, 31 newborns per hour or 1 newborn every 2 minutes in Uttar Pradesh. Most of these deaths are preventable or treatable, and it is therefore of extreme urgency that concerted efforts are made to prevent these deaths through measures such as quality reproductive health services, antenatal care, assistance of skilled health workers, access to newborn care when necessary and education to foster healthy practices for newborns. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 16% of India’s population and in contrast, 28% of India’s newborn deaths. The number of newborn deaths in Uttar Pradesh is more than any other State in India.
